Carex is partnering with a biotech industry partner to hire a Histotechnologist I based in Redwood City, CA.
Summary
The Histotechnologist I performs skilled and accurate preparation of patient specimens under supervision, ensuring high-quality histological processing and compliance with all applicable laboratory standards. This role supports diagnostic and research activities through precise sectioning, staining, quality control, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
Contract length: 7mo+ with strong potential to extend or convert
Shift: Mon-Fri, 3pm – 11:30pm
Compensation rate: $40 – $52/hr
What You'll Do
- Perform routine and non-routine histology activities, including microtomy/sectioning and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining under supervision
- Conduct macro-dissection of samples and monitor specimen workflow queues
- Maintain strict quality standards to identify and escalate issues impacting test results or safety
- Prepare reagents, solutions, and controls; perform and document equipment maintenance and calibration
- Interact with pathologists, internal teams, and external partners to ensure timely, high-quality specimen processing
- Assist with sample returns and support research and development studies
- Contribute to process improvements, SOP development, and workflow optimization
- Support equipment specification, installation, and maintenance
- Provide training and guidance to R&D staff on histopathology practices
- Generate reports on process metrics and support inspection readiness and regulatory efforts
- Participate in development projects related to new services, processes, and histopathology advancements
- Maintain compliance with Quality Management System requirements and uphold organizational values
What You'll Bring
- Associate degree required
- 2+ years of experience in a histology laboratory with demonstrated competency in microtomy, embedding, and routine staining
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize tasks effectively
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with laboratory equipment such as microscopes, microtomes, and pipettes
- Strong computer skills and ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting
- Physical ability to perform repetitive lab tasks, handle specimens, and use required protective equipment
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship
- Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or a related field
- ASCP certification (HT or HTL)
