Ever stared at a job description and felt like you needed a translator? Traditional job descriptions can be more confusing than your uncle’s TikTok feed. Let’s break down the corporate lingo and figure out what these teams are ACTUALLY looking for.
“Buzzword Bingo”
The Code: “Seeking a dynamic, results-oriented, synergistic team player with a passion for innovation and a proven ability to think outside the box.”
The Translation: We need someone who brings a lot of energy, can ideate, doesn’t mind a moving target, and is focused on innovation and driving results.
“Vague Yet Specific”
The Code: “Experience with enterprise-level SaaS platforms and a deep understanding of agile methodologies is crucial. Familiarity with CRM systems and marketing automation tools preferred.”
The Translation: We have a very specific tech stack, but we’re not going to name it because that might limit the applicant pool. If you’ve used something similar, you can probably figure it out.
“We Don’t Actually Know What We Need”
The Code: A rambling, disjointed list of skills and experiences that don’t seem to connect.
The Translation: We have a vague idea of the problem we need to solve, but we’re hoping the perfect candidate will magically appear and tell us exactly what they can do. We’re looking for a hero.
“HR Jargon”
The Code: “Demonstrated competency in stakeholder management and change enablement within a matrixed organization.”
The Translation: You need to be good with people and leading a variety of people at various levels within the hierarchy. Dealing with different departments, getting people on board with new things, and navigating our complicated internal structure will be important.
Of course, not all job descriptions need Duolingo to translate. Many companies are striving for clarity and authenticity. And remember it’s just one tool in assessing whether a job is right for you. If you have concerns about what you see, look for clues that confirm or deny your suspicions. Check out their website, online reviews, trust your gut, and be sure to ask the tough questions during your interview!
