Histology Lab Trainer

Position Overview

Carex is partnering with leading Scientific Organization to identify a Histology Lab Trainer to support training, onboarding, and competency development within a high-volume, CLIA/CAP-certified histopathology laboratory. This role is critical to ensuring laboratory staff are properly trained, competent, and compliant with regulatory, quality, and safety standards while supporting the mission to help prevent, detect, and guide the treatment of cancer.

The Histology Lab Trainer will work closely with Histology leadership, Quality, and Laboratory Operations to deliver structured training programs, maintain competency documentation, and continuously improve training materials and processes. This position requires strong histology technical expertise, exceptional communication skills, and a passion for developing others in a fast-paced laboratory environment.


Key Responsibilities

Training & Competency Development

  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver onboarding and ongoing training programs for histology laboratory staff.

  • Conduct hands-on training for histology procedures, ensuring alignment with SOPs, safety standards, and quality requirements.

  • Perform and document competency assessments for laboratory personnel in accordance with CAP, CLIA, and company policies.

  • Identify training gaps and implement remediation or refresher training as needed.

  • Maintain accurate and audit-ready training and competency documentation.

Curriculum & Materials Development

  • Create, update, and maintain training materials, job aids, and reference guides for histology processes and equipment.

  • Partner with Histology leadership to standardize training approaches across shifts and teams.

  • Support implementation of new assays, workflows, equipment, or process improvements through targeted training programs.

  • Assist with revisions to SOPs and training documentation to reflect current laboratory practices.

Collaboration & Quality Support

  • Collaborate with Histology Supervisors, Managers, Quality, and Laboratory Operations to align training with operational needs.

  • Support preparation for CAP inspections and regulatory audits by ensuring training and competency records are complete and compliant.

  • Reinforce best practices related to quality control, safety, and biospecimen handling.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert and resource for histology staff regarding procedures, workflows, and training expectations.

Continuous Improvement & Leadership

  • Identify opportunities to improve training effectiveness, efficiency, and consistency.

  • Provide coaching, feedback, and guidance to laboratory staff to support professional development.

  • Model accountability, integrity, teamwork, and inclusion in all interactions.

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance and flexibility to support training across shifts as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program.

  • 5+ years of histology laboratory experience in a clinical or high-volume laboratory environment.

  • Strong working knowledge of histology techniques, including microtomy, H&E staining, tissue processing, embedding, and equipment operation.

  • Experience training, mentoring, or onboarding laboratory staff.

  • Knowledge of CAP, CLIA, and applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform essential job functions with or without accommodation.

  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.


Preferred Qualifications

  • HT(ASCP) or HLT(ASCP) certification.

  • Experience supporting training programs in a CLIA/CAP-certified histopathology laboratory.

  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and training/learning management systems.

  • Experience supporting audits, inspections, or regulatory readiness.

  • Prior experience in a trainer, lead, or senior histology role.


Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work standing for extended periods and perform repetitive laboratory tasks.

  • Ability to use histology equipment including microtomes, stainers, embedding stations, cryostats, and microscopes.

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.

  • Exposure to chemicals, biological specimens, and laboratory equipment in accordance with safety protocols.

  • Compliance with personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
